JUSTIFY YOUR INCLUSION: 13 COMMANDMENTS FOR THE NEW CHURCH LEADER

TEXTS: Acts 20:28, 1Cor 1:26-31
“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”

”Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

It is a good thing to be called into a leadership position of the Church but it is not easy to succeed as a Leader. Many people have been Church officers for over 20 years now but there is nothing to distinguish them from even new converts! The reason is very simple. They have not been able to justify their inclusion.

In order to succeed as a good Church Leader (or Officer) you should be able to take good care of the following:
1. Yourself (and family)
2. The flock of God (Church members)
3. The pure word of God (Church Doctrine)
4. The Sacraments (Church practice)

To be able to justify your inclusion into the leadership team, there is the need to take good note of the following 13 commandments:

1. Consider your calling purely as the grace of God, and not on any personal qualifications and connections. Those who trust on their capabilities but not God do not end well as leaders.
2. Avoid crashing with other officers by learning your duties and responsibilities very well. Acquire leadership manuals and handbook of your church and always study them diligently.
3. Know that no knowledge is useless. There are so many things for you to learn. Be teachable and learn from any available source - books, other officers, ministers.
4. Respect the Old Soldiers (those who have been serving as Officers for a long time). Respect and seek their advice even when they appear “Colo” or old-fashioned to you.
5. Be prepared to take up any new challenges and responsibilities that will be assigned to you.
6. Be a very good team-player: Learn how to live and work peacefully with other officers especially, your immediate superior and subordinates.
7. Learn how to keep secrets. Members should be able to confide in you their personal problems and even their sins but you are to keep every such thing between you, God and the confidante.
8. Don't be a dictator. Respect other people and their views. Embrace all people with their annoyances and surprises.
9. Don't leak confidential information from meetings. Watch out to keeping the oath of secrecy.
10. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Practice what you preach because the Devil frequently designs temptations out of the leader’s pronouncements.
11. Appearance is very important. Dress properly and appropriately whenever you attend church or other church activities. Beware of “over dressing” and “under dressing”.
12. Be ready to attend all calls, meetings, conventions and retreats.
13. Please, in every ministration that you undertake as a leader, keep to time.

If you strictly observe these commandments then you will be heading towards success and all manner of promotions in your leadership. May the lord help you to grow and keep you as a chosen leader growing into the image of Christ in every sphere of human endeavour. Stay blessed.
