DARE TO BE GOD’S MAN
DARE TO BE GOD’S MAN
Text: 1 KINGS 2:1-4
Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: "I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man."And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn
Introduction
David had ruled Israel for 40 years and was about to die. Upon many controversies, he had succeeded in making Solomon the next king. He was then giving Solomon his final advise or a handing-over note
David wanted Solomon to show himself a man. Was Solomon not a man? Why? What then did David mean? It is not all men who are men! David wanted Solomon to stand out as God’s Man - a Man of God.
God’s Man
One whose heart is totally committed to the Lord. The most important commandment of the Lord is to “..love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)
True man of God could be identified by the following characteristics:
• One who will dare to stand where others are running away. ( their unquestionable loyalty)
• One who dares to believe when others doubt. (their unshakable faith)
• The one who dares to call problems challenges. (their mission-mindedness)
• One who dares to be good when surrounded by an evil environment. (their impeccable righteousness and holiness)
• The one who dares to be faithful in everything. (their honesty and integrity)
A typical example is David. God described him as a man after my own heart, 1Sam 13:14.
Qualifications
By obeying, observing, and walking in the law of God (v. 3, Josh 1:8)
Benefits
God’s Men enjoy inner strength and joy – 1Chron 16:26-27.;
They Divine protection – Ps 31:20;
They enjoy rest and peace – Ex 33:14
Other Types of Men
The greatest title to be sought for, especially by the Christian, is to be identified as a MAN OF GOD! If you do not strive to be one, you may end up being one of the following:
1. Man Woman – very weak, undisciplined, eg: Eli, 1 Sam 2:11
2. Woman Man – deceptive, hypocrite, eg; the Pharisees, Mat 23:13
3. Iron Man – very hard with an unbendable heart for godly directions, not teachable, egocentric eg; Pharaoh, Ex 10: 28
4. Child Man – immature, malleable, pliable, eg; Rehabeam, 1 Kin 12:13-14
5. People’s Man – crowd follower, boastful, public-satisfying, eg; Pilate, Mk 15:15
6. Food Man – gluttonous, self-gratifying, eg; Esau, Heb 2:16-17
7. Money Man – money grabber, materialistic, motive for every action is money eg; Achan, Josh 7:1, Judas Iscariot, Mt 26:14-15
8. Women’s Man – promiscuous, lustful and weak willed, lacking self-control, eg; SOLOMON! 1 Kin 11:1-3:
But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites-from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, "You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.
What a great paradox! Solomon could not become what his father wished him to be, because of his greed, ambitious and promiscuous lifestyle. He chose to be Women’s Man! He married 1,000 women out of lust and political expediency which eventually left him dying in the hands of idolatrous women, in spite of his fame, opulence, wisdom and initial piety.
In spite of all his laudable accomplishments, the Israelite kingdom collapsed soon after his death due to the unsustainable methods he used in building it.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
1. It is better to pay any price to remain as God’s Man.
2. It is possible to be successful in life (and in ministry in case fo a pastor or church leader) but not successful before God.
3. Ambitious projects can make you popular but cannot guarantee you the approval of God.
4. Any successes and glories achieved through methods which are unapproved by God will never last, but may even create problems in the future. Don't create artificial problems for your predecessors and next generation with greed and fame.
The final question: Whose man are you?
